re: Where's the line?

"Just $40,000 to $50,000 remains of the money won in the malpractice case after Terri Schiavo's heart stopped in 1990 and left her in what court-appointed doctors say is a persistent vegetative state. Deborah Bushnell, one of Michael Schiavo's attorneys, said the money is being saved for litigation expenses. "
....
"Terri Schiavo's medical costs -- which Bushnell says are relatively small -- have been paid for the past couple of years by the state's Medicaid program for needy people.

"She's a healthy female," Bushnell said. "The problem is that she doesn't have a cerebral cortex."

Bushnell said she has been paid $80,309 since getting involved in the case in 1993. George Felos, who was hired by Michael Schiavo around the time he began the effort to remove his wife's feeding tube in 1998, has been paid $358,434, according to Bushnell.

Neither attorney has petitioned the court for payment since 2002.

Although she did not have a specific accounting, Bushnell said more than half of the $700,000 earmarked from the malpractice award for Terri Schiavo's care was spent for that purpose, with the rest going toward litigation. Michael Schiavo got about $300,000 in the malpractice case, but Bushnell said she does not know how it was spent or if there is any left. "

So, it seems that around half of the 700,000 of Terri's money is earmarked for legal costs of attempting to get her killed. In other words it could read that if the lawyers manage to finally kill her, they will be paid the remaining amount. Since it says earmarked instead of spent, it's reasonable to assume that the fund 1/2 of the fund was already spent on the lawyers trying to remove her feed tube and rest is earmarked for these lawyers trying to remove the feeding tube.
It's possible that in real terms there is about 1/2 of 700,000 left in the trust fund and lawyers would have to wait for for her death before getting their "earmarked payment".

But this has got to be seen as spin and hearsay type evidence, because
of privacy rights the actual record are not public. I think it's not unreasonable to read this as meaning there is just 40,000 to $50,000 left after the lawyers take all their cut. And it could also possibly that the trust currently still has around 350,000 which hasn't actually been dispersed yet. I think that there is little doubt that the lawyers who are acting to end her life, have be paid at least half of the money intended to pay for her care.
I don't think it's accurate to say that all this money has been spent, and it's certainly not true that most of it was spent caring for Terri.

What seems to be the case is a lot private dollars is being spent fighting all the legal battle. Some lawyers are working for no money to fight to save Terri life. And advocacy groups are pouring tons of money [a wild guess probably in the millions dollars worth] fighting the legal battle. So it's not really about the cost of her medical care- this a red herring. The real costs have been in legal costs- Terri's money, advocacy groups money, and of course the State and even Federal dollar being spent on the all the legal costs.

Notice the spin at Slate:
"keeping her alive costs about $80,000 per year, and at least $350,000 of the malpractice settlement awarded to Schiavo and her husband in 1992 has been spent on her care."

Someone might assume that 80,000 per year is being spend from the trust fund on medical costs, and they would be making a wrong assumption.

This is just a love feast of Lawyers from the very beginning. Terri was used as a reason to sue for a million bucks. Oh, look what those bad people have done to this woman. Then, thank you for the million, now we going to pull the plug on Terri after she has served her purpose- but it didn't go as planned, her darned parent had to interfere, the nerve of these people.

Now, for what R.L. said:
"1) the trust fund portion of the settlement that paid for TS' care was exhausted years ago. TS' care is now on medicare. That same government dole you have objected to on record in the past."

If the trust fund had been used for caring for Terri, then there would have been plenty of money to pay for her care. Here you have a case where the patient has lots of money and the husband doesn't use that money for that purpose. Medicare is not saving Terri. If Medicare were to vanish tommorrow, Terri could be easily supported without it. But medicare does exist and can be used for someone who was awarded $700,000 for the stated purpose of providing for her medical costs.

"2) TS has been offered large sums of money to walk away and sign away guardianship of TS. He has refused."

Got a link for this?
But who knows what this might mean.
Example:
Do you want a large sums of money? All you have to do is go all over the country saying that you like hot orange donkey dicks.
Or there is this terror group all kinds money they want to transfer to someone, all you have to do is sign over your bank account and they will put large sums of money into it.

I get lots of email from complete strangers offering me large sums of money, and strangest thing is, I've refused them.

Offered by whom? When? How much? What were the terms of the agreement. Without at least the barest of details it's a complete throw away statement.
