Must have been about 1972. I was hitch-hiking up and down the West coast. I was stuck in a town I couldn't get a ride out of, and did not feel welcome in. I had to find a place to spread out my sleeping bag and get a few hours of sleep before dawn. But everything felt really exposed. Like I would be discovered while I was asleep. [I assume that the homeless get over fussiness like this, pretty quickly.]
I began to have a series of waking dreams with that trapped/paralyzed feeling. These were punctuated by periods of genuine wakefullness where I thought: "Jeez that was scary!" For days after, I had uncharacteristic nervousness and insomnia. Very similar to the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress D, except that it did not last for more than a few days.
