The cosmic ray cloud formation idea is interesting, but the case has yet to be defended scientificaly. The author appeares to have "cooked the books" with his data. Find the article I read from EOS if you can. Of course the doubto-head bloggers will take any headline that smells tasty, details be dammed.
It is interesting to note that cosmic rays might play a role in initiating lightning discharges.
Sun more active in the last 70 than in the previous 8,000? Sounds fishy but I'll withold judjement as I know jack-squat about tree rings.
"I disagree that solar activity is not a climate influence. Everyone working with satellites and the ISS knows that solar activity can change the configuration of the atmosphere significantly."
And the link to the NASA science web page about the puffing up of the outer atmosphere increasing drag.
Oh, Brosz. Puhleeze. This is what I expect from Johannes but not you.
To be clear, what we're talking about here is the thermosphere, the atmosphere's vacuum interface. Less than .0001% of the atmosphere by mass, getting heated by increased solar UV and expanding. This is significant if an object is in freefall and has a conserved quantity of kinetic energy. It's not a major energy input in terms of the bulk of the atmosphere.
They're talking about the thermosphere in the article. The troposphere where "all the action is" even has a nice label, Weather and climate.
