The Iraqi elections happened on 30 January. Saddam's tyranny started in 1979. Is it reasonable to expect a severely dysfunctional society traumatized by 26 years of totalitarianism to heal in 5 months? As one would expect, the newly created Iraqi police force and military were heavily infiltrated with ex-Baathists and jihadis. The Iranians, Syrians, Saudis and our own hard-left want this experiment in Middle Eastern democracy to fail. Remember that the Battle of the Bulge happened almost a year after the Battle of Stalingrad. The Battle of Appomattox happened 21 months after the Battle of Vicksburg.
With paitence and good management, democracy in Iraq will succeed.
