We use chemicals to adjust the octane rating. Ethanol is less explosive than gasoline. So could we not use a mix of ethanol to adjust the octane instead of the chemicals? If so, you can also subtract the cost of the octane-adjusting chemicals from the cost of ethanol production in studies like the one quoted in this thread.
