Growing corn specifically to make ethanol probably isn't worth it
However, can't ethanol be made from the corn stalks and other waste material? If it can, then grow the corn for food and use the waste for ethanol. It's kind of like cogeneration (using industrial waste heat to generate electricity) - by itself it's inefficient but cogeneration is using energy that would otherwise be wasted.
