Rebuttal from US Corn Growers Association

Is Ethanol Energy Efficient

I'm not certain which side is correct, honestly. Brazil is a net ethanol exporter, from sugar cane, so results vary with the crop used. And sugar cane can't be grown in northern climates, so like any agricultural crop, selective breeding is going to be extremely valuable to get good results. Whatever the crop that is eventually used, I am 100 percent certain that if we don't reduce our oil consumption we are FULLY fucked. The best way to do that is to regulate the weight and horsepower of non-freight vehicles. People don't like wimpy cars, but have you ever seen a Formula One racer, or a Lamborghini, or a Ferarri, up close. Man, those cars are tiny. And there are valid arguments that lightweight cars are safer, since they have superior braking ability. I once saw an econobox avoid a collision with an entire wheel assembly that detached from the aft end of a trailer of an 18-wheeler on a freeway. That car stopped on a dime. Good thing too, cause that wheel assembly was about the same size as the car. But in this case, I don't think a truck or an SUV would have escaped major damage or even a fatality from a collision with one of these things. But the econobox did. They are better at avoiding collisions than any other vehicle on the road.
