Cats bind with specific people in families. And he probably "knew" you were going to be away for a long time, due to the conversation, the excitement, and your packed bags. And he was going to be left alone.

I would think he decided he'd either go looking for you, or just lay down somewhere and not go back home to an empty house and no where comfortable to sleep. He may have actually died that night, and came back to you in spirit to say goodbye.

I had a cat for 18 years and lost her to a car accident out front. A few days later she came back and woke me up one night by jumping on my bed. I woke up, sat up and saw her CLEARLY in the hallway. She was already "gone', but I felt it was her spirit coming back to me.

I've also heard stories where people SEE a deceased friend or relative in their room at night the same time they pass on.

By the way, I didn't check my story on the vision of Christ above...it should have read "He had a crown of thorns on his HEAD."
