I am not a doctor so I do not know if they are the same thing or similar phenomena. I thought hypnagocic derams were 'waking' dreams and were akin to hypnosis. Sounds similar yet different in details.

FYI the article was from Science News which though not infallible tends to publish well vetted long feature articles.
