I have a feeling that the first true explorers of the galaxy will not be us, but our AI descendents. They will be far more capable in handling the Cosmos.
Why have ships full of needy biologicals roaming the galaxy when you can have an AI do the same with much more efficiency?
Sending expensive and needy humans to Mars isn't planned to happen until the 2030s, and note that it is still a lot of talk over hardware.
I firmly think our next step in human evolution will be a radical one, and it is called AI. It's either that or we face stagnation and extinction. We are already advancing too rapidly technologically and numbers-wise while remaining essentially in our cro-magnon states .. And I also state once again that properly designed AI will be able to survive and explore the Universe far better than any human, even a modified one. They will also be able to communicate better with any ETI encountered, who likely will also be some version of AI. .. (..) But I also find the idea of a vastly superior AI exploring the Cosmos and making contact with similar ETI also romantic, exciting, and in many senses more practical and likely.
NOW PLEASE NOTE: I AM NOT TRYING TO STOP YOU FROM POSTING THIS STUFF, OK? - Obviously you are as TOTALLY free to post your thoughts as anyone else, and yes - I guess it does fall within the range of this board, so I was wrong there. And I don't arrogate to myself, the right to tell you what to write or what to believe.
But it's hardly suprising if I read you as cheerleading on the end of consciousness. And don't be offended if I dumped on the overqualified idiot in your link, presenting his superficial speculations as 'deep thought'. And I reserve MY right to say and write my own opinion of it.
