To expand on my answer...
Sometimes you reach for the salt, sometimes you ask "please pass...".
There are such people who always ask and never do because they enjoy being served. They are assholes.
There are such people who always do but never ask. Some might find this a fine quality in a man. Some might think of such a person as a self-sufficient rugged individualist. I think of him as the asshole who dipped his sleeve in my soup.
