Most people agree on what is bad behavior.

So if they behave badly themselves, they have to fail to see that behavior in themselves. Seeing yourself as others see you is very difficult, if not impossible, and no one can be trusted to evaluate others' opinions of himself with any level of accuracy.

Most evil people (or even just common, everyday, run-of-the-mill assholes) don't see themselves that way. They always evaluate their own actions and opinions as honorable and decent. Do you think Adolph Hitler thought of himself as anything but a patriotic, dedicated public servant?

This is why people who are indeed assholes,(or worse) must always ascribe pernicious motives to their critics. They are not lying to others, they are lying to themselves.

Narcissism and paranoia. I'm better than they are, that's why they are all out to get me.
