"All that's left is oil."

Not quite. There is also the incredibly remote possibility of personal revenge.

Texas Governor George W. Bush in 1999: "No one had envisioned Saddam -- at least at that point in history -- no one envisioned him still standing. It is time to finish the task."

And in 2002: "There's no doubt his hatred is mainly directed at us. There's no doubt he can't stand us. After all, this is a guy that tried to kill my dad at one time."

Is there not an old saying in Texas or Tennessee that "blood is thicker than oil"?

I'm sure no modern American president would use his office to settle a personal vendetta at the expense of the people he represents. It must be something else.

President Bush last August: "And I remind people, when they think about the conflict we're in, to think about World War II, when an enemy of ours -- Japan, for example -- is now a loyal friend and an ally because of the hard work we did, not only during the war, but in the post-war reconstruction of Japan."

During the war? Well, you know, we were doin' a heck of a job.
