OH... MY... GOD... Not again...
I had hoped that 'The day after Tomorrow" would be the last movie to do something like this. I had never heard of 'Category 7, The End Of The World' until I saw your post, so I looked it up on the internet... judging by the preview it is an absolute piece of pseudo-scientific trash...
Was it just a commercial endeavor?
In spite of screaming message was no message intended?
Was it produced by the VRWC to make the greens look like morons?
Do the greens think that the motoring public are such morons that crap like this is the best way to win them over?
Serious questions.
I think that the answer is that this was a movie that was taking advantage of the public fear and publicity created by hurricane Katrina- I am sure it started production before the hurricane (?) but it is clearly trying to take advantage of the hype. It was clearly written with NO regard for scientific reality.
The "writers" wanted a MEGA-DISASTER to make for a cool movie... they chose weather. To explain their ridiculous plot they latched onto global warming... (I have not seen the movie, just read comments on it and seen the preview, so I am not qualified to say much more).
It is quite possible that the show did preach about global warming in a political way- if it did then it did FAR more harm to those that are serious about the REAL issue of global warming... Just as 'The Day After Tomorrow' did... I dont think it was made to make a political statement on the subject, I think that if it did make a political statement it was in an ignorant attempt to 'be relavent'... It was only made to make money.
I dont see it as a conspiracy on the left or the right, I just see it as an example of how colossal ignorance can end up doing great harm.
Do you remember the spate of movies and TV docudramas made quite a few years back about Earth being hit by gigantic meteors? There really was no political card to be played, but they hyped the drama and butchered the science... this is just the same old BS in my opinion. (I especially loved the NBC crap movie where a laser the size of a large suitcase blew up an approaching meteor the size of a mountain- ah lasers, the miracle solution to badly written plots).
I wouldnt read a sinister political plot into this dreck, but I would look hard at what it says about popular culture's contempt for science and education... there are many thousands of grad students out there that would have happily corrected the factual errors for beer money- but instead the morons just remained ignorant and in la-la land and created complete crap...
This is depressing, but I dont think it is sinister- just my opinion based on what little I have seen... It could be the movie is better than I think, it also could be the politically motivated crap that you seem to think it is- given that you actually saw it I will not argue it with you. What I will say is that you should ask yourself if what you saw was more consistent with a 'subtle' political plot by one side or the other... or was it more consistent with a bunch of idiots writing a very dumb thriller for a buck?
