And as for Ebenezer Scrooge...

That story was the perfect archetype of the conservative creed that it's not only good to make the world a better place, but that it's up to the individual to make it happen.

Scrooge's initial sour view is that he pays good taxes to take care of the poor. And no doubt he pays quite high taxes. From his own standpoint, he does more for the community just by running a business and employing Cratchit than he needs to. There is no implication that he is ever anything but honest in his dealings, but he never cuts anyone a break.

The flashbacks and other visions he is treated to not only explain a lot of his personality, but show him that generosity is not inconsistent with business or profits. His old boss, Fezziwig, is apparently a delight to work for, yet there is no implication that he was any less prosperous than Scrooge.

A wiser Scrooge at the end reforms by giving of his own wealth and time to make things around him better. I suppose for the moral to be more modern, he'd run for office and institute more government programs for the poor.
