Whatever we do.........

Must be done politically first, with UN agreement.
We have created a Pandora's box. Never before has the whole world had so many destructive weapons and diverse cultures who have long-standing hatreds. We could be standing on the brink of destruction.

Nuclear technology SHOULD be allright for countries to develop, if used for energy sources alone. We shouldn't be able to dictate who and who can't develop them. We should use guidelines.
Problems arise, when one group becomes arrogant and stockpiles them for a first strike.

The US is big and powerful enough to manage the world, IF they will set the EXAMPLE.
That would include letting UN weapons inspectors do their job. That would include LETTING them do their job and not demoralizing them or lying to the public about them. That would include NOT invading countries for nebulous reasons.
Our problem is that we have lost our credibility. The Bush team has proven they use faulty intelligence as a guideline and and that they are trigger happy. We have also shown our hand in more ways than one that leaves us vulnerable. They know the Iraq war is breaking us financially and that our equipment is low. Other countries are banding against us and it would behoove George Bush to tread carefully and try and bring allies back into the fold without bribes or coercion. I don't know if the world respects him enough to even listen to what he has to say, and because Tony Blair followed him into the quagmire (supported him even), their mistakes are everyone's mistakes.

We need a whole new approach to this nuclear problem; and first strikes are NOT the answer. They should only be used as last resort. But now that we have John Bolton running the UN, and the UN is no longer our ally, and Russia and China are building together; I'd say it leaves us all in a very precarious position......
Does anyone have any answers?
