Every driver in a free market system, some of which you actually list, discourages a farmer from doing exactly that.
Not true. Ever heard of slash-and-burn farmers? And if you extend the metaphor beyond farming (which is kind of a special case) you have all sorts of slash-and-burn techniques that pervade business. Clear cut lumbering, dumping unwanted stuff wherever convenient, fishing till theres no more fish, polluting the air till health and life expectency are significantly impaired, etc. All of this because the driver is profit, and profit dictates that you minimize your cost and maximize your income and screw the grandkids.
