re: We're Americans?

I do agree with you Lindy. I said in another post that if you have a cause you believe deeply in, at times it's better to forgo or lose a battle to win the war. Sheehan could've worn less provocative clothes to the event and still gotten a message across by simply showing disgust at the president's words.

However, since Bush has been playing this game of kicking people out of his events that have even the tiniest potential for disruption, her actions opened that dialogue. There have been scores of people manhandled and banned from seemingly public events where Bush has spoke because of a bumper sticker on their car or a pin on their lapel. Some events have required sign loyalty oaths prior to entry. Democratic congressmen have been denied hearing rooms because the topic of their investigations could've been embarrassing to the administration.

Our country needs openness and can't shy away from restrained protest. Certainly, had someone stood up and started screaming they'd be crossing the line. Sitting quietly with a t-shirt on hardly qualifies as disruptive.

Not sure I want a thin-skinned president. I prefer a confident leader that can think on his or her feet and respond intelligently to any disturbance instead of one protected by thugs.
