Rewriting history

I wasn't particularly impressed. It's the same list, becoming set in stone as the classic list of exculpatory anecdotes. But the list represents some serious cherry-picking. Your favorite, the one about the goal being installation of democracy, is a prime example.

During that period Bush, and Cheney and Rummy and Colin and Condi and their whole chorus line, amplified by a few purchased journalists and the willing cooperation of Fox News, made lots of statements laying out the reasons for invading Iraq. The major theme was WMD, with a minor theme of an alleged tie to Al Qaeda, flavored with vivid stories about Saddam the Monster. In the midst of all that they document one speech by Bush advocating installing a democracy in Iraq. What else would he have recommended? Communism? To be generous, the thread of democracy was at most 0.1% of their thinking, and judging by the lack of planning, it was more of a back-of-the-mind notion that after the war then of course that's what would happen.

Colin Powell went to the UN to press the case for war, and it was entirely about WMD. Why didn't he advocate forcible regime change to install a democracy?

It's sooo ironic that the piece leads with the tired rant about rewriting history. What else is that essay but an attempt to rewrite history?
