Battling personal demons
It's not a matter of supporting Bush, it's a matter of opposing "The Left", huh? The thing is, your description of your Enemy is a fictional character:
To me, it's about what the Left represents, their policies, and what they would do if they got back in power
....
The attitudes presented in the war against Islamic facism by the Left are exactly the same ones presented in the war against communist totalitarianism. The blaming of our own side above all others, the need to appease and surrender, and the consistent adoption of the positions and views of our enemies in every conflict. Unfortunately, in the last thirty years, the Democratic Party has morphed into just one more arm of the Left.
That's an interesting description of "The Enemy", strongly archetypical in fact. Because the song remains the same...with few variations except the name of the Menace, that's been the Conservative script for a long, long, time.
The casting has been more creative in the past. In the 50s the dramatis personae would have included "fellow travelers" and "commie symps" and "fifth columnists" and "pinkos" and "egghead professors", a whole panoply of evil left-handed monsters hiding in the closet. "Suffragettes" and "Anarchists" terrified an earlier generation. There's always an ample supply throughout history of those horrible People Who Want to Change Things to obligingly step into the role of villain in the Conservative's epic and eternal narrative of Struggle.
But the song remains the same even if the lyrics of today's version are simplified in the modern style to a rant against a generic "Left".
The fact that the classic description of The Enemy expresses what's so obviously an archetypical fear buttresses my contention that there's such a thing as a conservative personality. One component of it that's strongly evident is that perception of constant threat, that need to order reality to produce a quota of villains out to destroy All That Is Good and Decent, to reconcile the model. And in a sense the perception's not completely inaccurate, it's just that "attacks" on the status quo don't arise from malevolence, they simply arise from time and change. There will always be villains to slot into the archetypical Nightmare on Conservative Street.
So I guess I'd be tilting at windmills if I said "relax, Tom, there's no horde of Leftist moles burrowing into the fabric of our nation plotting the overthrow of America to please their demonic masters in the Kremlin! Take a few deep breaths guy, calm down, you're safe, and America's still here!"? No? Don't buy it, huh? Sorry to hear that, but there's nothing I can do beyond pointing out that your fears are simply delusional. We "Lefties" are not The Enemy.
