The fantasy...

"If our guy was in charge, the world would be at peace."

Few knowledgable people believed Iraq would remain stable under sanctions forever, and both Kay and Duelfer stated in their reports that Saddam's consistent pursuit of WMD would have resumed the minute the pressure of sanctions was reduced.

Before the war, human rights groups made almost a full-time career of condemning the sanctions, rolling out their toll of dead Iraqis and their children on a routine basis. To have liberals be able to turn around and declare with a straight face that "sanctions were working" is jaw-dropping.

If you think the cost of maintaining the level of military threat near Iraq that got Saddam to start accepting inspections would have been one percent of the current cost, you might want to recount. The "no-fly zone" operations alone were no threat at all to Saddam's plans, and were ongoing throughout the time inspectors had been gone.

There is absolutely no evidence that Iran, North Korea, or any other antagonistic nation would have suddenly become tractable if we had only invaded Afghanistan. Both nations' nuclear programs long preceded Bush's election.

I can only wonder at the schizophrenia of that group of liberals who submit that if we hadn't invaded Iraq, we would have enough military strength to threaten or attack other "axis of evil" nations. Apparently, those wars would have been acceptable.
