The administration had a lot of yes, no & maybe answers to the WMD question. Bush in his major address to the nation said that Saddam would very soon have WMD and that the war was a preventive strike.
Rumsfeld and Powell illustrated the activities at various facilities that were suspected of housing. The bottom line is Saddam had made WMD in the past, stockpiles of chemicals capable of producing WMD were unaccounted for and the UN was on the take -taking bribes from Saddam.
Heck, for all we know the French ambassador, Kofi Annan or their stooges leaked intelligence to Saddam about UN inspections so Saddam could ship his WMD chemicals & paraphenalia to Syria or play the shell game as long as necessary.
The inspections were a joke. The UN is a bad joke. Saddam was a monster. The people of Iraq are religiously obsessed, largely uneducated and prone to violence - like most folks in the region.
To blame this Iraqi mess all on GWB or "neocons" is laughable.
Making the US and GWB out as the bad guy is the common view held by those whose corrupt activities were rudely interrupted, by partisan fanatics and by their uneducated parrots who conveniently are also historically illiterate and by the media who profit from generating ANY sort of political commotion and fueling the partisans with innuendo, half-truths and outright deception.
The truth is the UN is too blame for Saddam's decade long arrogance, ambitions and for the millions of Iraqis suffering starvation, mal-nutrition, execution, etcetera.
Get it right and put the blame on the Iraqi mess where it rightfully belongs - on those UN members and EU companies who sold their soul to Saddam for a few lousy bucks. The roots laid by corruption bear bitter fruit. The US is now harvesting that crop of UN/Saddam duplicity & corruption and the nations who have helped us are honorable and good and deserve only praise for trying to clean up one of many den of inequities that find their home all over the third world.
To be blunt what we're doing NOW (re-construction, economic support, promoting education)is the sort of thing the UN was supposed to be doing for over TEN years but instead the UN is in the tyrant-propping business and Saddam was one of their A-list clients.
