--Would our ground forces be "credible" if they were tied up in large numbers in Afghanistan instead of Iraq, which is what liberals have said should have been done? Why or why not?
I said that sufficient forces to capture or kill OBL should have been used a long time ago (back when the Taliban was disintigrating.). I think that no liberals have called for our troops to be "tied up". Bizarre thing for you to say.
--Were our troops "credible" when we had them lined up in battalions outside Iraq, AFTER we had taken Afganistan down, and asked Saddam to step down?
Yes they were quite credible. They were not credible enough to get a crazy shit to abdicate, though. What forces would have been?
You know, if you're really concerned about our "credibility" as a military force, how about addressing that large contingent of Americans, including one of our major political parties, who believe that the proper military policy is for America to bail out when things start getting a little rough?
I hear your point about credibility, and I agree. When we start a war and do not complete it satisfactorily, then people do get the idea that we can be beaten with perseverance. This does not mean that we can afford to continue fighting every war until we win no matter how many centuries it takes.
Our lack of will for this particular war ties back to another kind of credibility. Americans no longer believe that Bush's plan to occupy Iraq can help us be safer nor protect us from terrorism. Americans no longer believe that Bush can deliver on his promises (stable friendly Iraq, Iraqi democracy, Iraqi prosperity). Do you, really? I mean, he went in promising we could pay for the war with Iraqi oil money? Said we would create 1.5 million Iraqi jobs? You really have any faith in this guy left? Why on earth?
You know, when you are losing at the tables a smart guy says to himself: "Maybe I need dinner, and a shower." A compulsive gambler says: "I can't quit now. If I do I will have lost all that money I've already lost. Can I borrow a hundred?"
