I haven't read "The Da Vinci Code", or seen the flick, but it seems to be shaping up to be a major battle in the culture wars.
I can't wait. I find it astonishing that institutionalized religion, a philosophical system based on faith and revelation, and wracked by endless internecine struggles of it own, is mobilizing big time to challenge the factual basis of.....a novel--a form of communication that doesn't even pretend to be truth. I've seen religion go to war against erotica, philosophy, politics, even science, but fiction? I guess the Vatican and the fundamentalists have never read "The Passover Plot", and wait til they get a load of Tom Robbins' "Another Roadside Attraction".
There's more than meets the eye on this, there are much worthier targets around for the religious authorities than a potboiler mystery, something's going on. As Mark Twain once said , "Truth is always stranger than fiction, because fiction has to make sense."
