re: Harry Potter for Catholic grown-ups
Very insightful analysis, Mary Anne!
When I have nothing to do I like to surf through the Christian Movie Review websites. You should see the job they did on "War of the Worlds"! I was amazed they could find so much threatening subtext in a century-old adventure story brought up to date with special effects. Perhaps the original tale had some clever social satire and political commentary placed there by that old Lefty and reprobate HGW, but not much of that survived Cruise and Speilberg.
As for myself, I thought it was a great flick, even if the science was somewhat flaky. I guess I was just foolish enough to think it was only entertainment.
