re: "unquestioning obedience and brutal domination"

That's an out and out lie Tom and you know it. For every "atheist" regime (and few of them started to power with that goal or mission statement), I can name you 4 times that of brutal history pushed by some religious faction in the name of God.

Often, the atheism came later after the regimes came into power to put down the last bastions of political power of local churches. They cared little about the religious messages. They cared more that people gathering together without goverment oversight carried the threat of political subversion.

Hitler began with a strong and violent Christian message in stirring the hatred towards the Jews.

Communist Russia's history shows a mixed bag where leaders would use religion when it suited them and go against it when it didn't.

There were evil atheists of course but to somehow try to pin oppression and some moral emptiness on people of no faith is a load of crap. Shall we start a scorecard of atrocities based on the religious beliefs and statements of national leaders throughout history? You don't even want to go there.

This is clearly one of those labeling things you do where you paint with a broad stroke. It doesn't fly when one examines your statements in the light of day.
