War is a dehumanizing event. Presently there are three independent atrocity investigations going on, all allege brutal murders AND administrative coverup.
The one thing we are not hearing is any pity or compassion for the 19 year olds that we trained to kill and then put in a position where it was expected of them. I am not excusing their brutality or their lack of responsibility. I am commenting on the situation that put them in Iraq.
At this point, the Iraqi people do not see them as liberators or saviors, even if they might have at some time in the past. They are seen as occupiers and a temporary necessity perhaps. Now, the military has decided to introduce a kind of sensitivity training to them to keep them from slaughtering more civilians.
It is time for even the arm chair hawks to recognize that having to go to war is a sign of political failure and a last resort that ruins young lives, removes the joy of youth and puts our young under stressors that effect them their entire lives.
My dad went to war so I would not have to. It didn't work, so I went into the military so my sons wouldn't have to---I pray to whatever powers may be that now it will work.
