Let me put it in Star trek terminology. Front line military service is generally filled with red shirts - and all that implies.
Asking Scott if he's served in any other context would be fine, but when posed as criterion for qualified debate, as I interpreted it, it made your position seem as if you were trying to disqualify opinion based upon whether or not a citizen has enlisted for such service.
I also pointed out that red shirts generally don't call the shots. A person has to have demonstrated more than mere service or loyalty to get to wear the yellow shirt.
My defense was not of Scott's statements or positions which were, indeed, inflammatory. Rather it was of the equal value and consideration of his opinion with one who has served.
Being a Former Liberal I must do my solemn duty to defend others against all real/perceived forms of discrimination. *
*Especially from military-oriented, Starship Trooper types like yourself.
