Lindy, I gotta agree with ER here. Even though I believe government and the oil companies are capable of intimidation of technologies that might cut down on their power or profit, an act like is described there is just too stupid to be believable. There are way too many ways they could've intimidated the inventor without resorting to something so out in the open like that. They could sic the IRS on the guy. They could offer to buy him out. They could do extremely covert operations to sabotage his work. Accosting a guy in his car wearing getups that would point fingers at govt or big business would be an inane act and, even though I believe these guys to be somewhat corrupt, they're still very smart about propoganda and politics.
It sounds more like a setup by the inventor himself to get attention. There's certainly motivation from him to garner a national stage and sympathy from the public.
Lindy, I hope desperately that there's this magic invention waiting in the wings that will suddenly free us from the grip of oil but, everything I know about physics and thermodynamics tells me that the alternatives are probably a long time coming. There is promising research in hydrogen and solar but from what I hear, even with these resources utilized to their maximum potential, distribution problems, energy requirements for creating the resource, safety and environmental concerns, and cost are all formidable problems that cannot be ignored. Obviously we're not doing enough and putting nearly enough resources into the research. Let's hope that changes soon.
