It's all a question of cost-benefit analysis, what can we afford?
I have a friend at work whose thinking of buying an RV, but he had to buy a really big truck to pull it. (12MPG--without a tow), and he commutes to work every day in it. It may be a year before he gets his RV, and he'll probably use it for a few weeks every year.
Are we the first generation in history to have kids and dogs? No, we got along without SUVs before, the VW microbus got 25 mpg, we don't need to do 100 with the air conditioner on when driving alone in our SUV. We could have our cake and eat it too if we just settled for smaller portions.
I could afford to own a boat and a big motor to tow it to the water but I choose not to because there are better things to spend my money on.
Do I do this because I'm a virtuous environmentalist, no, I don't do it because for me it would be an indulgence I can live without. I can't expect everyone else to feel this way but neither do I have ignore the fact that people who do are affecting my life even if I choose not to do it. There comes a time when we have to take responsibility for our actions instead of insisting on every entitlement we're due.
We simply cannot go on like this indefinitely, and the whole world can't go on like this at all.
