Hi REB & LJK
Interesting discussion guys. Firstly, reversing fusion is likely a net energy drain. Converting mass to energy is as good as it gets, and all the Sun's mass energy will last it a mere 10 trillion years at its current output. Energy won't return to material form once released - unless Randell Mills is right - so once you've liberated it, that's all you get. If recent work on black holes is correct, then multitudes of mini-ones should be available to drop into dead-stars to convert their mass to energy.
As for a bunch of red dwarfs... how the heck do you keep their orbits stable???
Also red dwarfs seem to settle down after a few billion years and stop flaring, so mature red dwarfs will be just fine for long term life. Artificial planets in a cloud around a red star won't have the same tidal issues as a big fat planet.
