Hiding in plain sight.
If we can create, or even move to, an existing red dwarf, protecting ourselves from flares should be a piece of cake. We could always move underground, or if the planet is tidally locked, move to the nightside. This allows us simultaneous access to planetary resources and stellar energy. It also greatly increases our options and viability. Red dwarfs are long-lived, stable (except for the flares), and they make up the vast majority of all stars. One other advantage is that they're so many of them, they are a good place to hide from potentially hostile civilizations.
I can't help it. I'm paranoid.
