I have been pushing private space activity since the late 1970s, and published a newsletter on the subject for a few years. Most of the rocket companies I've worked with have been privately funded. Only the most recent one I'm contracting with is currently working on NASA and military contracts.
Government manned space programs have produced amazing technological feats at huge expense, but have developed nothing in the way of a true space infrastructure for the average user. Almost four decades after the first Moon landing, we have yet to put another person on the Moon, or even a bloody rover, and the systems we are developing for that now (finally) look oddly like the old Apollo tech. For this we spent forty years?
NASA's main job, as it is for most bureaucracies, is to employ thousands of people forever. The private sector's goals are to get something that works out the door. Development culture vs. final product culture.
