"For a while, there were a number of companies like Iridium that proposed small, low-earth-orbit communications satellites, and private launch companies started ramping up to meet it. Rotary Rocket, one I was involved with, was one of these. When the small satellite market crashed, the Roton launch system principle did not survive the scale-up necessary to handle larger payloads, and the company went under."
My question why didn't they switch to a sub-orbital tourism market- please don't tell they didn't think about it. I will accept they might not have considered it when they started Roton, but I if no one else posting about this possiblity many moons before they actually gave up on the project- granted it might been too late at that point.
Related to this is also the X-33- had they made this operational, even if it lacked the ability to go into orbit, it could be used for sub-orbital purposes.
