Re: McCain:
I just finished reading an essay in a collection by David Foster Wallace. The collection is Consider the Lobster. The essay is "Up, Simba", in which he recalls his days as Rolling Stone's political correspondent on the McCain campaign trail in 2000. In between terrific descriptions of reporting life on the road, including a description of the elite media reporters that the others called "The 12 Monkeys" because they looked like they came out of the same box of animal crackers, Wallace remarked that McCain's campaign lost what sincerity it had the very second it became possible that he could win. Tilting at windmills is great for the noble eccentric. Owning and operating them makes goring them with lances much less fun.
Wallace's most cogent observation, for me, was that the liberal people didn't really cheer McCain, because they didn't realize what he really supports. They cheered their own ability to cheer, to be refreshed by listening to someone whom they believed will tell them the truth about himself, even if he's not someone whose positions they would support if they were sober.
BTW: If nominated, I will not run. If elected, I will not serve. Be glad. I would put child care and elder care at the very top of the national agenda.
