He has a good chance of being the next Republican candidate for president. He makes a calculation as to how many votes he'll get or lose if he adopts a particular position. This decision may cost him the election if the Democrats post a strong candidate, but it may help him if they run a weak one. It all depends on whether he feels he needs conservative Democrats more than he does conservative Republicans. Or maybe it's related to the fund-raisng capability of the Fundies. It's all a numbers game. Isn't democracy wonderful?
