I think your origins are wrong here ER.

Have Gun Will Travel and other Have ____ Will Travel are more likely derived from the very popular Bob Hope autobiography Have Tux Will Travel, that was published in 1954. I am not even sure Hope originated it since it alludes to a classified ad offering monologue services for all occasions

Yes, Wire quite obviously referred to telegraph but as you can see the way the card is set up, it is understandable that some people thought Wire was his first name.
