re: "Outland"

The production values were very good, and the grunge was used masterfully. It wasn't just the mine operating areas that were gritty, everything had a worn look, and even the bigshot's offices had the low-rent look of a Motel 6. The doc's lab was cluttered, the living quarters were cramped...it all worked to convey the unmistakable feel of a hardscrabble outpost populated by the dregs of the solar system, run at a minimum cost to the corporation back on Earth.

Reminds me of another contemporaneous flick..."Saturn 3" or something like that? Kirk Douglass and the supermodel with the perfect teeth...anyway, the interiors were too polished and self-consciously avant-garde, but with a few of the exteriors and some dialogue you got a similar sense of a remote outpost far away from the warmth of the inner system. I can't think of other sci-fi flicks set out on a moon of a gas giant, but for some reason the '80s inspired two of 'em.

As for other genres adaptable to a sci-fi setting...hmmm, I can't think of others either. Maybe it's because our present relationship to outer space only makes it possible to think of it in terms of adventure and battle. Ask me that question when people have been living off-Earth for a few centuries, and I'll bet we'd see that every known genre has been set out there. Perhaps you can only set something so banal as a musical in a place that's familiarly banal.
