SF films in the post-Star Wars grunge era

I wonder how the mining colony handled the intense radiation from nearby
Jupiter and the dozen or so constantly erupting volcanoes that can spew
molten sulfur for hundreds of kilometers on a world not much bigger than
Earth's moon?

And what does Io have that is so important to place a no doubt expensive
mining operation there? Why not use machines?

And the 2 most important questions of all: Whatever happened to the Io globe
on the desk of the station manager played by Peter Boyle and how accurate
was it?!
