re: NA attrocities

All sides in warfare commit attrocities. Often it's a chicken and egg debate though as to who started it. The point of my posts was not to argue who is guilty of abuse of others, simply that it's in the best interest of our country's ethical evolution to not take steps backwards because of the acts of others not under our control.

Of course Native Americans were not always the innocent nature-loving creatures some would like to portray. The suffered from extremists just as any group does. However, there's no denying that their own extremists gained power by the abuses of white settlers.

This whole debate we're in about somehow making torture acceptable, no matter how limited the rules might make it sound, has nothing to do with making us safer. This is intended instead as a another test of power to see how much dignity and concern for the rule of law Americans are willing to give up. Until Americans realize this, we're in for a bitter battle among ourselves. I think it's a necessary one. We've become fat, egotistical, and lazy as a nation wanting some feel-good politician to solve all our nightmares. We're in a war that only requires a sacrifice today of a tiny percentage of our citizens.

I don't think the next decade is going to be a pretty one in American politics and I don't blame terrorists for bringing it on. It's been simmering for a long time now and could play out in many different ways. Threads like this one show that the sides are becoming more polarized. I just know the side I choose is not going to be the result of fear mongering.
