There's a whole different set of time constraints between a days long mission and a months long one. The moon missions were too brief to allow any consideration of drawn out exercizes. Cliff scaling is dangerous and time consuming. It requires training, planning and time. Do you believe they had any of those on that mission? You might want to at least take a rope. How many feet of rope did they take to the moon Raoul?
This is a fundamental demonstration of why the flags and footprints comments about huiman missions to Mars are so bogus. Current plans put far more mass and capability on Mars than we had on the Moon. Combine that with far more time and you have a huge diffference in scientific capability.
