That's the plan. No need to go down to the bottom. However from the one Navcam image on the left side it appears there's a shallow ramp down to the bottom of one cliff that's been pushed up from the impact. My guess is you can get deduce everything you need to know about deep layers just from that observation. They may have roved to the right place here for the best partial entry.
