The question of what North Korea has to gain from tweaking the world is an old one, I think, because it seems to be their MO, against all reason as far as the rest of us are concerned. It may be similar to Saddam's impulse to want everybody to think he was Paladin-studly, armed with terrible weapons. Not to put to fine a point on it, but insane dictators may tend to suffer from penis envy, or perhaps "penis-competitiveness" is the better turn o'phrase.
Or you could just chalk it up to ego. No question that the world's attention is riveted on North Korea and its Mad Dictator, far out of proportion to its and his real importance in the world. KJI can't get no respect, so he's settling for attention.
Hard to say with remote pop-psychology. About all you can really say for sure is that there's no rational explanation for North Korea's behavior, so whatever it is, it's going to be an entree on the menu of psychosis.
