But it has been proposed that the reason the Israelis attacked the USS Liberty (a spook comint ship) was because they feared it was monitoring their communications, the war was going badly for them and they were gearing up to use their nukes against Egyptian armored formations in the Sinai. As it turned out, the Egyptians were turned back, reportedly by emergency shipments of conventional anti-tank weapons hastily delivered by the USA. This, of course, is all rumor. I have no way of backing any of these speculations up.
