Flashback

During the final months of our involvement in Vietnam, a Senator or Congressman (I can't remember his name, state or party) who supported Nixon's "Peace with Honor" position came to campus to speak to the student body. He agreed to do so on the condition that "no Vietnam questions" were to be asked.

I asked him if any military contingency plans to withdraw our troops had been drawn up because I was concerned that with the way they were scattered throughout the country, it might be very hard to assemble them and pull them out without exposing them to danger. This was not a political or partisan question, I felt it was an issue even a pro-war person might have just as easily been concerned with and likely to ask about.

He responded by yelling at me, and humiliating me for "breaking my word", pointing his finger at me and accusing me of, well, the usual charges of appeasement, cowardice, treason, and leftism. He then stormed out of the hall.

Six months later, I read that this gentleman had been forced to resign from Congress after being indicted for corruption and fraud and misuse of government funds.
