I'm probably puzzled by the same things you are. After the initial concession to reality, VDH spends the rest of the essay arguing that anything other than stay-the-course would be a defeat. I know that Tom agrees with the second half, and since it was the bulk of the essay, that may be what Tom found so agreeable.

That, and executing the members of our media.
