Remember that we're feeding pixels to the human eye. If you have 20:20 vision you have an angular resolution good enough to resolve 1400 x 1050 pixels on a 15" screen at 1.5 metres distance (I just tested with my right eye, which is 20:20 - my left is 40:20). Making the pixels physically larger only helps if your eyeseight is bad, or the screen is distant.
The whole TV/home theatre thing is about getting the screen big enough and far enough away to be comfortable to view. Close-up work is more tiring for the eyes, but if you need to resolve fine detail, just move closer to the screen until the individual pixels pop out.
Much of modern TV design is about blurring the pixels so you don't see sharp edges and you think you're getting better resolution than you really are.
