They have a chance at a better life. Before, the chance was zero.

The current wartime environment in Iraq is not a pleasant one.

Exercise for the student: compare the living environment of the capitals of Japan and Germany during 1942 with the same nations in 1935. Then check out 1945, 1955, and 1965.

Although abstraction is difficult around here, the alternatives in Iraq are largely binary: If you stipulate that Saddam and his sons were not overthrown, you have to stipulate that Iraq would now be ruled by Saddam and his sons, probably for decades to come, and their human rights record is open for all to see on that rule.

About 400,000 Iraqis died during the Iran-Iraq War, which Saddam started. About 25,000 died during the Gulf War, which Saddam also started. Those are just the wars, and we're not counting the dead on the other sides.

You can also add in the mass graves from the suppressions of the early 90s, the ongoing daily oppression, the executions, the ecological genocide, the hundred thousand "disappeared" Iraqis, and other things that seem to slip people's minds lately.

A favored segment of society did quite well in Iraq. Pointing this out is as appropriate and relevant as pointing out how well whites did in apartheid South Africa.
