One of the ironies here is that it's very difficult to get elected President from the Senate.
People seem to look at it as a lateral move, and outside of one's area of experience to boot, whereas a chief executive of a state is just moving up the ladder, doing a similar job in a bigger house.
So far, the Democratic candidates with the most buzz, or the most press, are connected with the Senate. We aren't hearing much about Tom Vilsack, former governor of Iowa, who has announced. Speculation is that Bill Richardson, governor of New Mexico, will also run. I'll have to take a good look at both of those guys.
I have nothing against Hillary. It takes a lot of ambition to run for President, to run as the first credible woman candidate, to run against her husband's personal life... Ambition shouldn't disqualify her, and seriously, if she weren't a woman I doubt people would say such a thing. There's still this feeling that ambition in a woman is... unseemly, because a lady doesn't do things for herself; she does them for others. An ambitious man is a man with ambition. An ambitious woman is a barracuda.
She's done a good job for New York, which works in her favor.
Obama is sexy as hell. I think he's running in 2008 so he can run for real in 2012, or 2016 if the Democrats take the White House in '08.
Long ago, when Joe Biden first ran for President, I wanted to vote for him. I think he's smart and pragmatic, and just slippery enough to do the job well. Right now, it would be a relief to have a technician rather than a tarnished knight in the Oval Office. But I don't think he'll get the nomination.
