He was writing in standard English of the English ruling class of the 14th Century. What we write is some mutant formation with peculiar spelling and incorrect grammar that evolved away from the pure English Chaucer and his contemporaries spoke and wrote. Our English is descended from the collective usage of indentured servants, religious extremists and fugitives. Australian English derives from what was spoken by convicts and political prisoners. They would have considered us Philistines.
You're holding headlines to literary standards, which is stupid. Journalistic English has had a different function than literary English ever since journalism has been practiced. Secondarily, you're making the claim that English as you speak it is better than other forms, especially forms used by people you consider inferior to yourself. Nothing is new under the sun.
